Breastfeeding Awareness Week

Once again MaterCare's St. John Paul II Maternity Hospital in Isiolo, Kenya, hosted a breastfeeding awareness week, in cooperation with the Breastfeeding Association, to inform communities, celebrate, and support breastfeeding.

The Breastfeeding Association, which celebrates breastfeeding awareness week each August, is comprised of support groups for mothers with children 5 years of age and younger. These mothers are encouraged to join "mother to mother" support groups that have been organized at the local level. The purpose of these gatherings is to teach one another helpful techniques and skills neccessary to successfully breastfeed and to offer one another support on infant and child feeding, maternal health and nutrition.

Women receive education and direction on the benefits of breastfeeding from professional staff, as well as additional support when it is needed. Included in this additional support is the opportunity for women to learn how to grow and maintain kitchen gardens to help against malnutrition at the household level.

In addition to being asked to support the mothers' support groups and to give mothers breastfeeding support and encouragement, fathers are encouraged to join similarly organized "father to father" support groups,

About 800 000 children's lives could be saved every year among children under 5, if all children 0–23 months were optimally breastfed.*
