Rwanda, Africa’s most densely populated nation, is ranked among the world’s worst for maternal mortality, according to U.N. data. MaterCare International is supporting a maternity construction in partnership with Watato Children of Africa in Ruhango seeking to change that.
“In Rwanda we have 750 out of every 100,000 pregnant women die every year. It’s a very big problem,” says Friday Nwaigwe, UNICEF’s country head of child health and nutrition.
Magdalena Słodzinka, the head of the Watato Children of Africa foundation, approached MaterCare for advice and support in 2020. Brick by brick and supervised by the sisters, this construction will be a part of the Rwanda Project. MaterCare will be funding the equipment and be involved with the operations to assist the maternal health project. We will also build up the project in the villages around Ruhango as well as Masaka and Rusheshe.
