In the most remote parts of the world, pregnancy and childbirth remain perilous journeys. Too many mothers face the unimaginable reality of bringing life into the world without access to skilled care, proper facilities, or even the most basic medical resources. MaterCare International stands in solidarity with these mothers, working to bridge the gap between high-risk pregnancies and life-saving interventions.
One of the most effective ways we do this is by training local traditional midwives and birth attendants—women who are already trusted within their communities—to identify high-risk mothers, provide essential maternal care, and know when to seek urgent medical assistance.
In many rural communities, traditional birth attendants (TBAs) are the first—and often only—line of care for expectant mothers. However, without proper training, complications like hemorrhage, obstructed labor, and infections can quickly become fatal.
Through MaterCare’s programs, we provide:
✅ Training in early risk identification – Teaching midwives to recognize danger signs such as prolonged labor, preeclampsia, and infections.
✅ Emergency preparedness – Ensuring midwives know when and how to refer women to higher levels of care.
✅ Sustainable birthing practices – Promoting hygienic, ethical, and environmentally conscious maternal care.
✅ Community support and advocacy – Educating families on maternal health to foster a culture that values the dignity of both mother and child.
Every mother deserves the chance to give birth safely. Every child deserves the chance to be born into a world that protects and nurtures life. This National Catholic Health Care Week, we are reminded of our shared responsibility to care for both the most vulnerable and the world we all call home.
