Dr. Robert Lester Walley was much more than an accomplished OB/GYN and international public health leader, he was a visionary whose compassion and unwavering commitment to safe motherhood transformed lives across the globe. Born on June 30, 1938, in Canada, Dr. Walley’s extraordinary journey was marked by profound professional achievements, deep personal connections, and a steadfast belief in the power of care, community, and conviction.

Dr. Walley passed away peacefully on June 22, surrounded by his children and grandchildren, leaving behind a rich legacy of love and memories. Predeceased by his father Leslie Walley, Marjorie Walley, and his beloved grandson Keagan, his legacy now lives on through his cherished family. He is survived by his beloved wife, Susan, and his children—Sarah (Bill), Simon (Danielle), Stephanie, Roisin (Cooper), David (Justine), John Paul (Michelle), and Peter (Amanda) along with his numerous grandchildren, including Will, Calleigh, Matthew, Robbie, Kayla, Emma, Luke, Noah, Eve, Freya, Nicholas, Jude, Tahlia, and Zayn. His family often recalls his warm spirit and his unmistakable charm, including his light-hearted love for a pint at the Duke of Duckworth (a reminder that behind his towering professional achievements was a man who deeply enjoyed life and its simple pleasures and a good joke!).

His illustrious career as an OB/GYN was paralleled by his commitment to education and international public health. A Master of International Public Health from Harvard and an Emeritus Professor at Memorial University, his career was dedicated to improving maternal and neonatal care both at home and abroad. He was instrumental in founding the Family Life Bureau of Newfoundland, a pioneering step that underscored his lifelong commitment to family, health, and community.

His career was also defined by his moral and ethical stance that could not be matched. A dedicated member of the Right to Life association and a trusted advisor appointed by Pope John Paul II to the Pontifical Council for Health, Dr. Walley did not simply blend his medical expertise with his Catholic faith, they were one in the same. His membership in the Order of the Knights of Malta and the honor of receiving the Pro Ecclesia et Pontifice (The Cross of Honour) stand as testaments to his unwavering commitment to serve humanity guided by his deep-rooted beliefs.

Perhaps one of Dr. Walley’s most enduring legacies is the creation of MaterCare International. With MaterCare, Dr. Walley transformed his vision into tangible action ensuring that thousands of women and their newborns received the care and support they needed, regardless of where they lived.

Dr. Walley’s approach was never about idle discussion. He was a man of action. As described by MaterCare’s Medical Director, Professor Bogdan Chazan, Dr. Walley was “incredibly hardworking” and dedicated to producing practical guidelines for maternal and neonatal care that were in harmony with the Gospel. His work was built on the foundation of the “Four C’s”: conviction, competence, compassion, and community. These principles were not only the pillars of his professional ethos but also a roadmap for countless healthcare professionals guided by his example.

His visionary leadership led to the drafting of the "Charter of Mother’s Rights" and the organization of numerous international conferences—eleven in Rome, one in Warsaw, and one in Zagreb. These conferences were more than meetings; they were vibrant exchanges where contemporary issues facing Catholic doctors were discussed, and real-world solutions were shared. Dr. Walley ensured that these gatherings were not just “talking shops,” but arenas where practical, compassionate action was the primary goal.

Dr. Walley’s influence was felt far beyond Canada. His contributions resonated on a global scale, reaching communities in need and inspiring medical professionals across continents. In Poland, a Holy Mass celebrated in Warsaw on July 2 by Archbishop Henryk Hoser paid homage to his extraordinary life and work. Professor Bogdan Chazan delivered a heartfelt eulogy, encapsulating Dr. Walley’s relentless pursuit of excellence and his determination to reach out to mothers in need. This international recognition highlighted that his mission transcended borders, uniting communities with a common goal: to provide care where it was needed most.

Dr. Robert Walley leaves behind an indelible mark on the world and anyone who had the supreme pleasure to meet him; a legacy of saving lives, nurturing families, and championing the rights of mothers everywhere. His work through MaterCare International continues to serve as a beacon of hope and a call to action for healthcare professionals and communities alike.

As we remember his life's work, we are reminded that his legacy is not confined to the accolades and titles he earned. It lives on in the thousands of children brought into the world under his care, the mothers who found hope in his initiatives, and the countless healthcare workers and colleagues who found support and community in his mentorship.
